| Time to look back on some horrible predictions
Dan Pompei of Sporting News declared, "Plummer still can play and likely will prove it next season." Paul Attner of Sporting News forecast the same: "Plummer will return to the NFL" for the 2007 season. ESPN.com's Jeremy Green speculated, "If Plummer ends up in Houston, he might have to sit behind David Carr." Plummer did not come back, and Carr wasn't in Houston either. Then there were the Rex Grossman predictions. "There is no question the Bears are committed to Grossman as their starting quarterback next season," Pompei of Sporting News predicted. The Bears benched Grossman twice, starting three different quarterbacks. Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN.com predicted, "Grossman will be fine. No way does he throw another 20 interceptions." Grossman threw only seven interceptions -- because most of the time, he was benched.
The unkindest bites are the human ones
It is estimated that there are between 3-6 million animal bites per year in the U.S, that 80-90 percent are dog bites, and 5-15 percent come from cats. About 1 million people each year seek care in the emergency room for dog or cat bites. Dogs have strong jaws and relatively dull teeth. Wounds caused by dog bites tend to involve more crushing, tearing and lacerations rather than puncture wounds. Crushed tissues are particularly susceptible to infection. Dog bites occur most frequently on the extremities (upper slightly more often than lower), followed by the head and neck. Small children receive more bites to the face, neck or head because they're near a dog's mouth. There are about 15-20 fatalities a year as a result of dog bites; most involve infants and young children.
Coopers Mills Dam Repair Costs Presented, Work to Start in 2009
Even if Whitefield voters in March endorse Coopers Mills dam repairs, the work won't start this year, predicted board of selectmen chairman Steve McCormick.
"There are too many departments involved" in the permit process, he told budget committee members Feb. 7.
What will most likely be presented to voters will be an article for $5,000 in design costs and $22,000 for the permit process that must be followed under Endangered Species Act requirements. The Sheepscot River is one of eight federally protected Maine rivers containing native populations of endangered Atlantic salmon.
Chuck Vaughan, chairman of the committee that has been pursuing the repair project since Whitefield voters last November approved saving and repairing the dam, presented cost estimates to the budget committee.
