Harper to draw the line on Afghanistan

The election, of course, won't be fought over Afghanistan. That is Harper's wish because he knows that the government has shown such incompetence in governing over the past few months that his hawkish stand on Afghanistan maybe the only thing that parts of the population may see as positive. However, it also carries downsides. The handling of the mission by the Harper government has been as loaded with lies as any other part of their agenda and the opposition parties could argue that Harper can't be trusted to be handed a majority and be given a blank cheque on this or any other part of their agenda. It also presents an interesting conundrum. If Harper goes to the electorate with Afghanistan and wins a minority (polls show a Liberal minority right now but let's give him the benefit of the doubt on this), he either has to change his policy on Afghanistan or the Governor-General has to ask the LPC to form the government even if they have less seats.

Lowcountry resident misses museum's shrunken heads

Shrunken heads are a product of the Jivaro clan, a tribe of people in the Amazon who considered their enemies' heads trophies.

Leff can remember the four heads' sewn-up lips and eyes, and their creepy quality.

They were more than interesting; they were educational, "a fascinating view" of a certain culture and should still be available for others to see, said Leff, a destination planner for Charleston Tours.

So where did the shrunken heads go?

According to Martha Zierden, curator of historical archaeology at the Charleston Museum, the heads are in storage. They were taken off display in the early 1980s, as public opinion changed on what was appropriate, she said.

"Ethics and the way we perceive human remains have changed over the years," she said, citing the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act as an example.

Microsoft's free enterprise search is a must try

Posted in:

Infrastructure Servers News Vista Desktop Microsoft

At the Heroes Happens {here} event in LA yesterday which saw the launch* of Windows Server 2008, one of the relatively hidden gems of the event in my opinion was Microsoft's free** Search Server 2008 Express. It's is a streamline install of Office SharePoint Server 2007 with almost all the enterprise search features that most users would want and is a must download for any Windows Server shop.

Even if you didn't own Windows Server 2003, 2003 R2, or 2008, it would seem like a great way to build a very cheap enterprise search engine appliance with a minimal Windows Server 2003 or above license and a simple 1U server for less than $2000 which is a LOT less than a $30K starting price Google Search Engine appliance with a 500K document cap.
